Benevolence
The National Benevolent Charity provides financial support and help to people who, through no fault of their own, are forced to live in poverty.
The modern welfare state has put an end to the destitution often accompanied poverty on past times. But that does not mean that poverty does not still exist. On the contrary, there are many people living in Britain today who cannot make ends meet and who cannot afford many of the necessities of life. Many are retired and elderly. Some have had a life of illness or disability and have not been able to work. Some have spent their lives looking after elderly or disabled relatives. Others have been left penniless after separation or divorce, by bankruptcy, or for some other unavoidable reason.

The National Benevolent Charity gives regular payments and one off grants to single people and to couples. Regular payments are to supplement meagre incomes and to make getting by in life a little easier. One off grants are to cover the emergencies in life, such as replacing a broken refrigerator or central heating boiler, or repairing a leaking roof.
